If you're moving to Northern Virginia, and have children, then schools will be an important factor in your decision re: where to live.
As most of us know, most colleges and universities consider 3 primary factors -- along with other factors – in determining which student/applicants to admit to their schools: (1) SAT scores, (2) grades, and (3) the caliber of the school from which the child received those grades. Reality is that for most/many parents, college is already in the back of our minds even when our child is 6 years old and we’re selecting his/her elementary school.
Below are several lists & resources to assist you in determining which Northern Virginia school is the best fit for your child. SAT scores, and lower school standardized test scores, are certainly one important factor that parents will want to consider but it should not be the only, or even the primary, consideration.
Our children learn differently and truly need the best learning environment for them – tailored to their learning needs. That may not be the school with the highest SAT scores.
Parents, of course, are the best judge of their children’s specific learning needs. As much as we all may want to believe that our child is one of the “best & brightest” that’s not always the case and it doesn’t need to be.
One important consideration in selecting a school might be how much academic pressure and competition we want our child exposed to/burdened with. Langley HS, for example, is ranked in the Top 50 High Schools Nationwide in the 2009 #47 to be exact. Those teens score very high on the SATs. As such, there may well be a good bit of pressure & competition between the kids themselves to excel academically. Attaining admittance to the top colleges in the nation simply is very competitive. Is it best for our child to be among the kids receiving the lowest test scores at Langley or would it be better for our child (psychologically and academically) to be among the highest/higher scoring kids at a different Northern VA high school?
Academic programs and class size (one-on-one attention) are also important factors to consider. Today, lots of kids have special needs, i.e., ADD or ADHD or Dyslexia, etc. The school that offers the best overall fit for a child’s specific needs and learning-style truly should be the most important consideration.
All of our Northern Virginia schools are excellent to very good which is evident in the various 2009 reports ranking high schools nationwide. The US News & World Reports Review takes it’s data substantially from the stats provided by the College Board.
As a Realtor, I do not recommend one school over another to my clients because I have no idea which of our excellent Northern Virginia schools would be the best fit for your child. Only you know that. Instead, I’ve tried to collect the best information & resources that I could find to assist you in determining that best school for your child.
